The Rolex Datejust 1603 was released in 1959 and continued production for nearly two decades, retiring in the late 1970s. Typically, the Oyster case and fluted bezel attached to a jubilee bracelet formed the iconic trio that many can easily identify as the Datejust. However, the 1603 stands out with its engine-turned bezel, which is only found on this reference, complemented by a silver pie-pan dial. The rare dial gained popularity in the ’60s and ’70s, with a beveled outer ring resembling an inverted cake pan.
*The pie-pan dial can also be seen on the Rolex Day-Date, as well as debuting on fellow competitors.
