Jean-Fran?ois Bautte started his Maison in 1791, but it was renamed Girard-Perregaux in 1856 following the marriage of Constant Girard and Marie Perregaux. Constant Girard was a well-known specialist in chronometry and the tourbillion. In 1889, Girard-Perregaux won a gold medal for its La Esmeralda Tourbillon at the Paris Universal Exhibition.
